As an employee, the relationship with a supervisor can make or break the work experience and as the adage goes, “people don’t quit jobs, they quit managers.” In fact, studies have shown that the most significant impact on job satisfaction is the manager-subordinate relationship. However, while managers play a pivotal role in cultivating work relationships with their employees, by managing up, employees can partner with their managers in getting the most out of the working relationship. But what is “managing up?” Quite simply, managing up refers to doing whatever you can to make your boss’s job easier by essentially managing your manager. An employee that effectively manages up uses the traits of a good manager to help bring out the best in themselves as an employee. Managing up makes your manager's job, as well as your day-to-day job and career trajectory, easier.
In this workshop, you will learn:
- What does managing up looks like
- The benefits of managing up
- How to manage up to a difficult manager
- Why it is important to know what you want in your working relationship
How do you show up? Bring yourself, your lunch and come as you are. The second half of Sway Skills is devoted to live dialogue. We welcome you to interact.
Webinars are on the fourth Thursday of each month 12-1 PM PST.
Recordings of the teaching are available for those who register.
